No, kako je sve počelo? Nedugo prije 1980-ih, solarni paneli su se uglavnom koristili u svemirskim aplikacijama, posebice u satelitima. Otprilike u to isto vrijeme svijet se počeo suočavati s naftnom krizom. Inženjerski izazov koji je Dr. Richard Swanson je shvatio da može solarne ćelije učiniti pristupačnijim. Na taj bi način bilo moguće proizvesti energiju iz sunčeve svjetlosti na konkurentan način u odnosu na druge fosilne izvore, čak i u domaćem ili komercijalnom kontekstu.
Za postizanje ovog rezultata bilo je potrebno održavati visoke standarde kvalitete i istovremeno pristupačnu cijenu. Tako je počelo istraživanje koje je, gotovo 40 godina kasnije, pomoglo pozicioniranju SunPowera kao lidera u proizvodnji solarne energije u stambenim, komercijalnim i industrijskim razmjerima.
Godine 1985. dr. Richard Swanson (koji je u to vrijeme bio profesor elektrotehnike na Stanfordu) dobio je stipendije od Instituta za istraživanje električne energije i američkog Ministarstva energetike kako bi podržao svoje istraživanje o solarnoj energiji. Uz pomoć ovih fondova, kao i financijsku potporu dviju tvrtki rizičnog kapitala, SunPower je službeno osnovan u travnju 1985.
